Being a Polyglot Today

Polyglots are individuals who can speak multiple languages. The word "polyglot" comes from the Greek words "polu-" and "glotta," which together mean "many tongues"

. Being a polyglot is not limited to geniuses or child prodigies, as some began learning languages from a young age, but many didn’t become interested until they were adults. Some were even terrible language-learners in school.

. If you are interested in becoming a polyglot, here are some tips and strategies to help you get started.

  1. Know your reason for doing it. There are no bad reasons, but there are some not-so-good ones. Unfortunately, if you set out to become a polyglot just because it sounds impressive or looks good on your resume, you probably won’t get very far. Becoming a polyglot takes years, if not decades, of hard work and dedication.

  2. Start with the most common words. People say that you have to learn the most common 1,000 words. This will give you a solid foundation to build on.

  3. Immerse yourself in the language. The best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in it. This means watching TV shows, movies, and listening to music in the language you are trying to learn. You can also read books, newspapers, and magazines in that language.

  4. Practice every day. Consistency is key when it comes to language learning. Try to practice every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes.

  5. Use language learning apps. There are many language learning apps available that can help you learn a new language. Some popular ones include Duolingo, Babbel, and Rosetta Stone.

  6. Find a language exchange partner. A language exchange partner is someone who speaks the language you are trying to learn and wants to learn your native language. You can practice speaking with them and they can help you improve your skills.

  7. Spend lots of time with native speakers. Spending time with native speakers is a great way to improve your language skills. You can learn new vocabulary, practice your pronunciation, and get a better understanding of the culture.

  8. Travel to a country where the language is spoken. Traveling to a country where the language is spoken is a great way to immerse yourself in the language and culture. You can practice speaking with locals and learn new words and phrases.

Being a polyglot can be a rewarding experience. It can open up new opportunities for travel, work, and personal growth. However, it takes time and dedication to become fluent in multiple languages. If you are interested in becoming a polyglot, start by setting a goal and creating a plan to achieve it. With hard work and dedication, you can become a polyglot too!

***** Babbel is a very fun learning tool. I love that a lot of the review formats are similar to games. It makes it entertaining and easy to use. I got this app because I recently moved into a predominantly Latinx neighborhood, and I wanted to be able to say hello and have small conversations with my new neighbors. I haven't gotten too much practice, due to the Coronavirus. But it does give me lots of time to practice my Spanish inside. I can't wait to put my practice to use. I would recommend this program to anyone!
